Born as a collaborative project between Sampology, (drum programming and production) Megan Christensen, (keys) and Sam Stosuur (bass) Middle Name Dance Band captures the colourful intersection between the club/electronic nights and the live jazz/soul crew bubbling in Brisbane.
Started as a studio project for volume 1 of the ‘Middle Name Dance Tracks’ series on Sampology’s Middle Name Records imprint, the overwhelming response to the 4 track release in October 2018 led to a debut live performance in December 2018. This first show not only won fans amongst Brisbane bookers and fans alike, it also cemented the continuation of the project with more song writing and booking requests for the trio.
This June and July, Sampology presents Middle Name Dance Band will take over West End’s The Bearded Lady for a fortnightly residency on June 5, June 19 and July 3. This residency will see the Brisbane based trio performing existing songs from Middle Name Dance Tracks Volume 1 as well as testing out new material from the forthcoming Middle Name Dance Tracks Volume 2, due to be released in Spring. Each night of the residency will also feature different special guests with sections of the evening devoted to improvisation between all musicians performing on the night. The Bearded Lady is the perfect venue to house this performance format delivering a warm live music space for punters and fellow creatives to mingle to great homegrown music.
‘Middle Name Dance Tracks Vol. 1’ is available digitally and on vinyl. The release garnered support far and wide from many of Australia and the world’s most respected curators and radio shows including Gilles Peterson, BBC Radio 4, RTR, CC Disco and Harvey Sutherland.
